PENCIL TESTS

Moana (2016)
Traditionally animated character exploration tests

"I was showing how Moana should play with her hair. This is very difficult to do in CG, but we wanted it to be a part of her character."

Another Moana test showing how her hair should move in the wind.

A Moana test with her again interacting with her hair.

Moana singing. It differs from regular dialog. It's more articulated. The breathing more pronounced.

A test of Moana's father, Tui. This is before the design was finalized and the voice is scratch (temporary). I had fun pushing the shapes. Watch it frame by frame to see how far I pushed it.

"A test of Moana's Grandma Tala. We were experimenting with her flappy "grandma arms". Again, like all the Moana tests, the dialog is scratch."

"A test of Maui from Moana. Dwayne Johnson had recorded some test dialog and I wanted to see how he sounded with Maui's design. The design went through some refinement after this (less belly)."

Frozen (2013)
Traditionally animated character exploration tests

Some folks asked me to post some of my animation on Youtube. So here is an Anna test I did for an early version of Frozen, to explore her personality and style of movement and expression.

Here's a Kristoff test I did for an early version of Frozen. We were testing voice actors to the character, who was very different in this version from the final film, as you will see.

Here's another Kristoff test done to the voice of a different actor. I was trying to push the squash and stretch in his face so the CG animators could see how much they could exaggerate.

Winnie the Pooh (2011)

Progression shot of Eeyore with first pass, tie down & clean-up phases

The Princess and the Frog (2009)

An early Naveen test (design wasn't final) for Princess and the Frog.

A scene by Randy Haycock (Prince Naveen), Mike Show ('swooning girls') and Matt Williames (Lawrence)

An Easter I did for the "Princess and the Frog" blu ray. It was an Homage to chuck Jones' "Duck Amuck". (so...Frog Amog? --naaww!)

Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001)

These are some Princess Kida pencil tests for Atlantis. The last one was cut from the film and replaced with a slightly different version.
